Savonlinna is located 280 Km away from Helsinki and 230 Km away from St Petersburg. The main attraction of Savonlinna, the oldest town in Eastern Finland, is the Olavinlinna Castle, one of the biggest medieval fortresses in Europe.

Savonlinna is easily accessible from Helsinki by plane, train and bus.

Unfortunately there will be no scheduled flights from Helsinki airport to Savonlinna on August 6. Organizers will provide free coach transportation for NPO2018 participants from Helsinki airport to the venue on Monday, August 6. The coach will depart from the airport tentatively at 5 pm. On Saurday, August 11, the coach to the Helsinki airport will depart from the Spa hotel Casino tentatively at 10 am.

Since 1912 the Olavinlinna Castle, hosts famous Savonlinna Opera Festival that takes place annually in July-August. In 2018, the closing performance of the festival will be held at the castle on Saturday, August 4.  The festival program is available at http://www.oopperajuhlat.fi/en. If you wish to attend the festival, please note that tickets and accomodation shoud be reserved well in advance. 

You may consider also combining your participation in NPO2018 with visiting St. Petersburg, which is 230 km away. You can visit St. Petersburg by Allegro high-speed train (see St.Petersburg by train), taxi or express bus providing you have Russian visa. Visa-free travel to St. Petersburg is possible if you enter St. Petersburg by ferry from Helsinki. Please check details at Ferry to St.Petersburg.
